About the Artist

Arthur Wesley Dow was an American painter, printmaker, photographer and influential arts educator. He was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts revival that became prominent in America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He advocated principles of pure design and promoted the creation of handmade rather than machine made objects. Dow is best known for his revolutionary ideas on teaching art. He taught his students to create art through elements of composition, such as line, mass and color, rather than copying nature. He taught many leading artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, and others.
