Color, value, texture, and line are the primary guiding elements for artist Jeannie Sellmer when she paints. Drawing inspiration from nature and organic forms, she interprets color, pattern, shapes, music and sensory impressions into visual elements, which are interwoven throughout the evolution of her paintings.
Each painting begins with the initial textured layer, to which multiple veiled layers of oil paint are added over many sessions. Working intuitively, Sellmer lets each painting serve as her guide; changing with each additional layer, retaining traces of previous marks and color, while others are obscured. Once completed, her paintings evoke both a sense of energy and contemplation, inviting the viewer to engage in the visual field with a sense of meandering exploration and open interpretation.
Jeannie Sellmer completed her formal fine art education at The Art Institute of Boston in 1978. After graduating she stayed in Massachusetts for many years, eventually relocating to New Mexico with her husband in 2005.
Sellmer is currently represented by Sumner & Dene Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.
