Andy Warhol explored themes relating to fame and celebrity throughout his career. In the 1960’s he painted portraits of many celebrities and political figures, and in the 1970’s and 80’s he was commissioned by the rich and famous to create hundreds of portraits. These works have become lasting records of the European and American culture of that time. Working with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts we have grown our collection of Warhol’s celebrity portraits to include Muhammad Ali, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dennis Hopper, Keith Haring, and Michael Jackson. These new works join the ranks of his most iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie O, Debbie Harry and John Wayne. And of course there are Andy’s self-portraits which are integral to this collection as Warhol is just as famous as his A-List subjects.
